Before joining NTU in 2000, Dr. Xu worked as a research scholar in Singapore, a senior research associate in Hong Kong, and an associate professor in Beijing. His research in international journalism, journalism education, press models, national images in the media, press freedom, Asian values in journalism, and online journalism has resulted in two books, four book chapters, and 14 journal articles. His research results have also been presented in 19 papers to the various international conferences.

His current research projects focus on world journalism wiki, online news designing and delivering, development journalism, online loyalty, online interpersonal communication, information flow, and media glocalization.

He is the webmaster of CCA, a US-based association of Chinese communication scholars. He was the editor of CCA News (2002-2004). He has served as a judge for media-related award competitions locally and overseas. He also serves as a media consultant for a number of companies in Asia and beyond.
